What is the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre?

The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre (CBHC) is a non-profit organization that has and continues to share the story of bushplanes and forest fire management for over 30 years. We currently have 24 aircraft in our collection; an interactive Children’s Educational Centre; and Wildfires: our fire-fighting adventure film. The CBHC prides itself on continuously being rated Sault Ste. Marie’s #1 Attraction, captivating tens of thousands of visitors annually. Our displays are highly interactive and guests can climb into many of our aircraft.

Summary

The Education and Collections Assistant role supports delivery of educational programming and the organization and management of the CBHC’s Collections. The dynamic role requires strong administrative skills and keen attention to detail, and the ability to deliver entertaining educational programming mainly to school groups.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Other duties, as assigned.
  • Deliver engaging and interactive educational content as per the CBHC’s program guidelines.
  • Complete administrative duties associated with educational bookings including booking, invoicing, photocopying, creation of worksheets and more.
  • Provide expert customer relations in all interactions.
  • Assist in the organization and delivery of social, educational and programming events to engage and enlighten audiences of varying ages and help generate revenue.
  • Support children’s and seniors’ programming when required.
  • Be trained in delivery of public tours and to assist with Northern Nature Trade.
  • Catalogue, document and perform data entry for a selection of artifacts and objects according to established procedures.
  • Ensure objects are stored and handled appropriately to prevent deterioration as per museum policies.
  • Work with the Curatorial and Education teams to develop interpretive and education materials and displays based on assigned archival content.
  • Is trained in and able to conduct Start Up and Shut Down procedures on the floor, turning on/off lights and exhibits.
  • From time to time, may be required to perform general maintenance of the building grounds and exhibits, including garbage disposal, wiping down exhibits, sweeping/mopping floor, cleaning washrooms, etc.
  • Comply with all health and safety policies and maintain knowledge of emergency procedures. Maintains security of building.
  • Maintain knowledge of events, products and gift shop in order to advise and sell to visitors.
  • Participate in outreach events, as assigned. 

Job Requirements

 

  • Meets all requirements under the “Eligible Candidate” definition
  • Degree in Education, Museum Studies, History or a related field.
  • Experience in customer service and/or educational delivery.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of education principles, methods and delivery for varying age groups.
  • Ability to conduct research and curate content for a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent computer skills, including use of the MS Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of databases and/or museum collections best practices.
  • Excellent attention to detail.

“Eligible Candidate” means an individual who: 

  • is either a new entrant into the workforce, is transitioning to a new career, or is unemployed or underemployed and is entering a new field,
  • has not previously participated in NOHFC’s People & Talent Program,
  • is at least 18 years of age,
  • resides in NorthernOntario, and
  • is legally entitled to work in Canada.

Compensation

  • $20/hour for a 35-hour week
  • This is a 12-month position
