Evolution

Fire is a natural part of the Earth's cycle.

The first peoples used fire as a source of heat and light.  They lived as nomads, moving on when they were threatened by wildfire.

European exploration and immigration brought about dramatic changes.  As settlements sprang up, the numbers of fires increased alarmingly, causing devastating loss of life and property.

Settlers urgently needed systematic, organized protection from fire.  Fire protection measures - legislation, public education, law enforcement, fire detection and suppression - evolved to meet the need.
